The future focus of Hong Kong's e-government program will be to put customers at the center of public service delivery so as to bring greater value to both customers and the government.

This was highlighted in a new booklet on e-government published recently by Hong Kong's Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau. Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology John Tsang said in the forward section of the booklet that the government had placed great importance on e-government work.

"The reasons are three-fold," he said. "First, developing e-government allows us to improve operational efficiency and introduce service improvements to benefit our customers, through technology exploitation and service transformation."

"Second, it is an effective way to drive the wider adoption of IT in the business sector and community. And third, it demonstrates the government's leadership role in promoting Hong Kong's international status as an innovative digital city," he said.

The booklet outlines the achievements of the e-government project, in terms of program implementation and international recognition, since the release of the first Digital 21 Strategy in 1998. It also sets out the roadmap for the next wave of e-government development.

"Our focus in the years ahead will be on understanding our customers, creating value based on what they need, driving utilization through creation of customer value and rationalizing channel management through a mutual realization of customers' and government benefits," Tsang said.
