New Zealanders revealed to be leading the world in their use of the Internet according to new survey

A new survey shows that New Zealanders are leading the world in their use of the Internet. The GO2002 survey taken last month, shows that 71 percent of New Zealanders had used the Internet in the previous month.

That was the highest percentage of the 31 countries surveyed, which included Australia, Great Britain and the U.S.

One thousand New Zealanders took part in the survey.

The survey found that 40 percent of people had used e-government services, such as accessing statistical or tax information, or registering a company online, compared to a global average of just 30 percent.

State Services Minister Trevor Mallard has welcomed the results, saying that the results indicate that New Zealanders are well positioned to take advantage of all that the Internet offers.

He says the Government's e-government strategy is designed to meet the growing demand for on-line services, and to provide greater opportunities for people to participate in democracy.

Mr Mallard says he and the Prime Minister will be launching the Government's new web portal on November 14, which is designed to provide easy and fast online access to more than 3,500 government services and resources.
