As national governments increasingly set up central digital teams, cities are now adopting the same model. The Wellington City Council (WCC) has just announced the launch of its own Digital Team to manage e-government services.
This follows a visit from the UK’s Government Digital Service last year to discuss the model. “The creation of the digital team shows [the] Council’s commitment to improving our customer experience and the way we deliver our services in the Smart Capital,” the New Zealand capital city’s mayor, Celia Wade-Brown said.
Many cities have ICT teams, but digital teams differ in that they focus on the front-end citizen experience rather than on the back-end technology and supplier management. Pete Herlihy of the UK’s Government Digital Service said “it is really great news that WCC has recognised the importance of developing a strong digital capability and culture, right at the heart of the organisation”. Last week, Australia announced the launch of its own national Digital Transformation Office. Similar teams exist in New Zealand’s central government and Singapore.
