Transforming Government since 2001
Handy real time updates by region.

To welcome New Zealand into the Open Government Partnership, FutureGov has scoured the country’s collection of open datasets.

There is a wealth of geographical data provided by the Kiwi government, but our favourite is the real time fire information from SMS alerts.

The dataset shows callouts for the Fire Service across New Zealand, split by region. It includes the time, duration, results, local station and address of the incident.

FutureGov chose this dataset for its potential. For example, it would be possible to use it and build an app that geographically represents the latest fires in New Zealand.

Further, the details of the data are useful for officials, campaign groups and concerned citizens alike. Is there, for example, a greater number of false alarms in the North Island? If so, does this require a communications campaign to better education citizens about when - and when not - to call the fire department?

It would also be useful to plot this data against spending on fire services by region. Is a fire-service under-resourced in one area, and over-resourced in another?

Finally, the dataset could be useful for building a citizen alert service. It could be that there's a fire around the corner while you’re at work, and it would be useful to register for PUSH notifications to tell you about it.

The data is currently quite messy. It needs scraping from an HTML table, and isn’t available as a CSV. But there is real potential here.

New Zealand, welcome to the OGP!
