The Dubai Police is set to launch today the experimental phase of 'electronic fingerprinting' in a run up to its use at various police stations in the next two years, a senior officer said yesterday.

The launch comes at the instruction of General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, in his capacity as Head of Dubai Police and Public Security. The electronic fingerprinting system is part of the e-government initiative adopted by the government.

Following a review of the launch of the state-of-the-art equipment, Head of the General Directorate of Electronic Services, Colonel Ahmed Hamdan bin Dalmouk, said that the system has been designed to achieve the 'electronic vision' adopted by the Dubai Police.

He lauded the efforts made in this direction by Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander in Chief of Dubai Police.

The official said that the launch represents the initial phase of the system and said that its use would start very soon at various police stations in the emirate. This new system will replace the old one very quickly.

A demonstration of the system's capabilities was carried out by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Head of the General Directorate of Criminal Evidence in the presence of other officials.

Individuals applying for certificates of good conduct and other certified documents requiring fingerprinting will be able to utilise the new facilities, Col. Bin Dalmouk said.

This will made the procedures at the men and women's sections simpler. Officials said a total of 18,286 people applied for such certificates in 2003.

According to Lt. Col. Al Marri, there are plans to implement the new system at various police stations within two years.

He said the move would turn all related transactions into simple procedures using modern technologies.

Dubai Police have stood first among Dubai's local government departments in the 'Dubai Programme for Distinguished Government Performance' from 1998 to 2002.
