Thousands of customers who have to visit Dubai Municipality every day can now spare themselves a journey thanks to a new online payment facility.

It allows bills and invoices to be paid on the Internet using a Visa or MasterCard credit card or with an e-Dirham smart card. It makes use of a secure Electronic Payment Gateway provided by Dubai e-Government. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Head of the e-Government Committee, yesterday told reporters the aim is to reduce the time taken to deliver services and improve internal processes.

Fourteen services are supported by the payment system, according to Lootah, who is also Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Environment and Public Health.

Another four services, including parking fines and Dubai Central Laboratories Services, are to be added to the list shortly.

Currently, the e-Pay service allows customers to pay online using a Visa or MasterCard credit card or an e-Dirham smart card. Shortly, the online payment gateway will also support account-to-account bank transfers.

Salem Al Shair, Director of e-Services at Dubai e-Government, said the online payment systems contain high quality security features. "We aim to provide 70 per cent of our services to the public through electronic channels by 2005," he said.
