Dubai Municipality launched a website "Explore Dubai" which will provide geographical information for local government departments. At a press conference yesterday, Qassim Sultan, director general of the Municipality, said the new website will give several local government departments access to the civic body's Geographical Information System (GIS). The municipality plans to add Etisalat and Dubai Police and other departments. All departments offering services to the public will be part of the link, he added.

Sultan said the site: www.dugis.ae would enable government departments like the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Civil Defence Department, Lands Department, and Properties Dep-artment to obtain geographical details of Dubai, analyse them and print them.

The press conference was also addressed by Col. Ali Al Sayed Ibrahim, Director of the Dubai Civil Defence Department, Khalifa Al Khalafi, Director General of Lands Department, Humaid Al Qattami, Director of the Properties Department, and Abdullah Obeidullah, Deputy Director General of DEWA.

"The launch of this site is yet another testimony to the pioneering position Dubai holds in Information Technology in the region," said Sultan.

He added that the move to link all government departments that use the GIS comes as part of the cooperation between the Municipality and other government departments and establishments.

The step, which is in line with the e-Government initiative of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, seeks to ease procedures for individuals, establishments and organisations.

He said www.dugis.ae is a GIS application that forms part of the Government Information Net-work (GIN) to provide GIS details through Internet browser.

Sultan added that due to the varied needs of the users, the application has been prepared on the basis of the category of users and their job profile such as planners, engineers, inspectors, administrators, etc.

Each category has been given specific jurisdictions in accessing the system and the DEWA, Dubai Civil Defence Department, the Lands Department, and the Properties Department have been linked to the system.

Users can obtain geographical information through an interactive map of the emirate on the page. They can also inquire about geographical details such as land plots, building rules and legislation, utilities such as sewage and drainage networks, etc. These maps can be printed or sent via email.

Eng. Mohammed Al Zaffine, Director of the GIS Centre at the Municipality, said the application includes all tools for analysing various types of geographical data such as the geodetic details, land details and other service details.

He said the integration of these details and the ability to analyse them would add value to the service in terms of increased productivity, high quality and reduced expenses on a long-term basis.

The GIS Centre at the Municipality was established in 2001 as per the law (No.6 of 2001) issued by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai proclaiming the centre as the sole official GIS body in Dubai.
