Certain Middle East countries have expressed interest in emulating the 'e-dirham' concept for collecting their government revenues, according to a top official with the UAE Ministry of Finance and Industry, which pioneered the venture here in 2000. "Representatives of these countries have held preliminary talks with us, though it is too early to reveal their identities," said Khalid Ali Al Bustani, assistant undersecretary for revenue and budgeting.

Other sources indicated that the countries include a number of Gulf states and Syria.

In the near future, they explained, means of cooperation with those countries, will be in the form of consultancies or usage of the e-dirhams.

Presently, all the federal ministries in the UAE use the e-dirham mode for collecting revenues.

On Saturday, Dubai became the first local government to sign up with the Ministry for its own e-Government venture.

Under the agreement, e-dirham will be one option available for users of the Dubai e-Government portal - www.dubai.ae - to make payments for any services on offer from the government departments.

Al Bustani declined to comment on whether some of the other emirates are expected to sign up with the e-dirham venture for their own revenue collections.

"Another area which our Ministry is looking at to expand the e-dirham services is the private sector in the UAE. There is lots of potential there for these companies to use these cards for their various payment needs," added Al Bustani.

In the UAE, there is a network of 2,500 point-of-sale terminals placed at the ministries, several companies and typing centres.

Many more will be added this year.

The Ministry will also be installing vending machines for the e-dirham cards within a month, the official added. Moreover, there are 90 branches of various banks selling these cards to users.

"The e-dirham has helped with ease of use and helped the ministries to service the public needs that much quicker," said Al Bustani.
