The winners of a nationwide eContent award were announced at a ceremony at the Gulf International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Gulf Hotel.

The event, under the patronage of Commerce and Industry Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro, saw 26 local websites in various categories being honoured. The eGovernment category was won by the Finance and National Economy Ministry (movne.gov.bh), the Interior Ministry's eVisa site (evisa.gov.bh), the Commerce and Industry Ministry's commerce portal (commerce.gov.bh), the Shura Council (shura.gov.bh) and the Ports Directorate (bahrainports.gov.bh).

The eLearning category was won by the producers of Healthy Living for Children, Healthy Living and Utilisation of eLearning CDs and the Reem88.com website.

In the eCulture category were jehat.com, tarbiya.net, alayam.com, khayat.net and bahrainona.com.

The eHealth category was won by the Health Ministry's website (health.gov.bh) and its intranet and by health promotion site zurba.com.

The eInclusion category was won by the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research's bahrainexplorer.com site and by women's portal womengateway.com. The eBusiness category winners were batelco.com, gulfairco.com, tq3.bh, tradearabia.com and Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait's bbkonline.com.

The eEntertainment winners were Batelco's inet.com.bh, almurjun.com and voicemaze.com.

The eScience category was removed because none of the entries qualified.

The competition was launched in June by the Bahrain Internet Society in co-operation with the then Commerce Ministry. The winners of the competition will be entered in next year's Word Summit Awards (WSA) in Tunisia.

The WSA will be held on the sidelines of the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia from November 16 to 18. It is organised by the International Centre for New Media, based in Vienna, Austria.
