Supreme Council for Health (SCH) President Lieutenant General Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al-Khalifa held a coordination meeting with the owners of pharmacies which import and distribute medicines.

The meeting focused latest developments of the planned National Health Insurance scheme, stressing particularly complementary functioning between the public and private pharmaceutical sectors.

National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mariam Adhbi Al-Jalahma and SCH Secretary-General Ibrahim Al-Nawakhda attended the session. Lieutenant General Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al-Khalifa announced that the Medicaid Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Program would be activated to be used by all purveyors of health services.

Under the digital scheme, private pharmacies will dispense medicines to patients through electronic prescription system in cooperation with the Informatics and e-Government Authority.

The SCH President stressed the importance of the DUR scheme, which is a systematic, criteria-based evaluation of drug use that will help ensure that medicines are used appropriately.
