Pension queries could soon be answered at the touch of a button thanks to a new online service being launched by the Social Insurance Organisation (SIO).

In the past, citizens would have to visit an SIO office in person to check on their pension entitlement '“ but with the 'e-key' system launched yesterday, such visits may soon become a thing of the past.

'People will be able to obtain their pension information and have access to frequently asked questions, as well as legal content and contacts,' said SIO information technology department e-services manager Khalid Al Tahmazi.

'The online service was only previously offered to employers, but this new system gives anyone in the private sector the option.'

Mr Al Tahmazi, who was speaking at the launch of the 'e-key' service at the SIO's Manama offices, added that monthly pension statements would also be included on the online portal. SIO information technology department executive director Reyad Almahmeed said the new service should cut down on office visits significantly.

'Most of the people that come to the SIO ask about their pensions and get recommendations about when they can activate it,' he said.

'With this new service people can do all that from home '“ they can not only check on their pensions but calculate future pension information and even get recommendations for the most beneficial time to activate it.'

To gain full access to the new system, citizens must visit either the Central Informatics Organisation in Isa Town or the SIO office in Manama to register for an advanced 'e-key' and password.

'The e-key requires people to physically go to the office and register their account using not only a smart card but their fingerprints, which offers almost the same level of security as being there in person,' said eGovernment Authority project leader Ayman Al Ansari.

'People can still sign up for the standard key online but that will give them limited access, the more private information is only accessed through the advanced key.'
