The recognition is for countries that have sought to revamp eGovernment portals and IT projects and link government entities in a manner that enhances their online presence as a unified entity.
The honour was bestowed on the kingdom during the 2014 Global eGovernment Forum hosted by Kazakhstan.
It was organised by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in partnership with Kazakhstan's Agency for Communication and Information.
At the forum, Bahrain participated in a ministerial roundtable, which saw eGovernment Authority vice chief executive Dr Zakareya Ahmed Al Khaja highlighting the kingdom's experience in the field of eGovernment, focused on national projects, mainly on the National Suggestions and Complaints System (Tawasul).
He also spoke about the Zajel project, the eKey project and other initiatives.
Dr Al Khaja said the three-day forum was replete with ideas and proposals which can be used as a platform for sharing expertise and knowledge among states, allowing a wider scope for new developments in eGovernance.
The theme of the forum this year was 'Smart Governance for Sustainable Development: New Opportunities for Partnerships in the Networked Society'.
Dr Al Khaja received the award from United Nations under-secretary-general for economic and social affairs Hongbo Wu.
