Bahrain is committed to propelling itself into the information technology age and has the right policies in place to make that happen, Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa said yesterday.

Speaking at the official opening of the Bahrain ICT Expo at Bahrain International Convention and Exhibition Centre, he said participation in the event, coinciding with the Third Bahrain International e-Government Forum, was of a high standard.

"The forum has some very interesting topics for discussion but the expo has come up with some breathtaking technologies on display," said Shaikh Mohammed, who is also head of the Supreme Committee for Information and Communication Technology.

"The exhibition is an extension of the success of the forum where companies have had an opportunity to display their services and activities," Shaikh Mohammed added.

Ministers and senior officials from the government and the United Nations as well as heads of e-government authorities from across the world attended.

Shaikh Mohammed said the exhibition would help keep pace with advances in the field and spread IT literacy at local and regional levels for the benefit of future generations.

The deputy premier also praised the exhibition's organisation, efforts of the e-Government Authority and all those who contributed towards the event's success.
