The Bahrain eGovernment Authority (eGA), Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE), Bahrain Information Technology Society (BITS), and Bahrain Internet Society (BIS) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at a press conference held yesterday to organize and manage the upcoming Bahrain International eGovernment Forum 2009 in its second edition.

The event, which will be held under the patronage of HE Sheikh Mohammad bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Supreme Committee for Information and Communication Technology (SCICT), will run from the 25th to the 27th of May, 2009, at the Bahrain International Exhibition Center.

Signing the MoU were Mr. Mohammed Al Qaed, CEO of eGA, Eng. Abdulmajid Al Gassab, President of BSE and Forum President, Mr. Ahmed Naeemi, Vice-President of BITS, and Mr. Ahmed Al Balooshi, President of the BIS. The MoU outlined the roles and responsibilities of each of the four entities with regards to the Forum and the accompanying exhibition, EGEX 2009.

In addition, six committees were formed to oversee the event: the Executive Committee headed by Eng. Al Gassab, Sponsorship Committee headed by Mr. Naeemi, Technical Committee headed by Mr. Emad Al Sindi, Exhibit Committee headed by Mr. Walid Kanoo, Marketing and PR Committee headed by Mr. Isa Abdulrahman, and Logistics and Administration Committee, headed by Mr. Jamil Al Alawi.

Commenting on the event, Al Qaed said that it will “increase awareness about Bahrain’s eGovernment program regionally and internationally and showcase its top achievements thus far. The Forum will also serve as a platform for constructive dialogue between those who work in the eGovernment industry. “

Throughout the course of the Forum, the best international eGovernance practices which have been successfully applied will be shared, as well as technical solutions which can be implemented to achieve excellence in this area.

Al Qaed added that several international speakers will be in attendance, including heads of various GCC eGovernment authorities, UN experts, regional and international eGovernment and ICT industry professionals, as well as representatives from various government bodies, technical societies, GCC chambers of commerce, academic experts, and coverage from local, regional, and international media.

More than 450 delegates and guests will participate in the opening ceremony of the Forum in May which will be held under the patronage of HE Sheikh Mohammad bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Supreme Committee for Information and Communication Technology (SCICT), and more than 300 delegates are expected to participate in the Forum’s workshops. In addition, the Exhibition will have more than 50 exhibitors showcasing the latest technologies to the public.

From his side, Eng. Al Gassab stated, “after the resounding success of last year’s event, we expect to see a more robust participation this year by hosting a large number of ministries and official delegations from the GCC countries, in addition to top ICT experts. We have also made full preparations to hold EGEX 2009, which will feature the eGA, Bahraini governmental entities, regional and international eGovernment authorities, and ICT companies.”

“We have delegated the task of organizing the event to those committee members who are well versed in conference management, in order to present the Kingdom of Bahrain in the best light possible,” Al Gassab added.

As for the Forum’s agenda, Mr. Naeemi said that a number of local, regional, and international experts will be on hand to share their knowledge and expertise among the attendees, especially from such international organizations as the UN, the European Union, and the Economic Cooperation Organization which will offer an in depth look at the eGovernance experiences in the world’s developed nations, in addition to the experiences of the GCC countries which will also be present. Naeemi also said that several sponsorship packages are available (Special, Golden, Diamond, and Platium) to enable the various organizations interested in the event to participate and help in the efforts to make the event a success.

BIS President Al Balooshi said the BIS keen to take part in this year’s event. “Participating in the event as a member of the Forum’s Executive Committee and head of the EGEX 2009 organizing committee helps achieve some of the BIS’s goals in spreading awareness about the importance of ICT,” Al Balooshi remarked.

He went on to say that the BIS’s long history in organizing various exhibits and conferences will help it in making EGEX 2009 a success and benefit the various companies who will be showcasing their products and services to the exhibit’s attendees which is comprised of key decision makers from all the GCC countries.
