The Karnataka government and Microsoft Corporation announced on Wednesday several e-governance initiatives, including the launch of a Bangalore One portal. At a joint press conference Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna said that the Bangalore One portal would help people to pay their bills and get other services.

“It is an urban answer, and takes technology to the doorstep of Bangalore citizens,” Krishna said.

He said the Karnataka government had become a zero piracy state with all illegal software in government offices having been eliminated.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates lauded the efforts of the government and said that the announcement was a very positive statement.

Gates said that the quality of education in India, from the primary to the university levels was of high quality.

A press statement from Microsoft said the company would act as a technology provider and consultant to the Karnataka government for the BangaloreOne portal.

The IT giant will also assist the Karnataka government in setting up pilot “smart school” projects in five divisions over the next one year.

It will also mobilise appropriate resources to assist the Karnataka government in developing an educational portal for building digital communities that connect school administrations, teachers, students, partners and academicians.

Microsoft will help the IT department and biotechnology departments to take advantage of the latest e-government framework based on its .Net technologies.
