The Government has completed four industrial smart city projects, under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) in Gujarat, Shendra-Bidkin Industrial Area (SBIA) in Maharashtra, Integrated Industrial Township (IIT) in Greater Noida and Vikram Udyogpuri in Madhya Pradesh, in a major milestone.
What is the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP)?
National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) is the Government of India’s flagship program to create world-class industrial cities with modern infrastructure and logistics. It is designed to improve manufacturing, encourage investments, create jobs and enhance India’s global manufacturing competitiveness. There are 20 industrial smart city projects with an estimated investment of ₹16,173 crore approved under the programme.
Four completed Industrial corridor projects
- Dholera Special Investment Region (GSIR), Gujarat
Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) is India’s first Greenfield industrial smart city and the biggest node of Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). It covers a geographical area of 920 sq. km, about 100 km away from Ahmedabad, of which, a 22.5 sq. km Activation Area has been developed initially at an investment of ₹2,784.83 crore. The project is approved and comprises plug-and-play infrastructure, such as roads, power, water supply, ICT networks and underground utilities. It is well connected by Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway, Dholera International Airport, major ports like Mundra, Kandla, Pipavav and Dahej. Industries such as semiconductors, renewable energy, aerospace, engineering, and pharmaceuticals are expected to be drawn to the city.
- Shendra-Bidkin area, Maharashtra
The Shendra-Bidkin Industrial Area (SBIA) is a Greenfield Industrial city as part of Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad). The project, spread over an estimated area of 101 sq. km, was approved in 2015-16 in 2 phases. The Shendra Phase 1 with 8.39 sq. km at an estimated cost of ₹1,533.45 crore and Bidkin Industrial area of 7,855 acres at an estimated cost of ₹6,414 crore. It provides plug and play industrial infrastructure, and is strategically linked with Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), NH-52, and close proximity of rail, airports etc. facilities. The township aims to draw in industries like automobiles, engineering, electronics, food processing, textiles and logistics.
- Integrated Industrial Township, Greater Noida (UP)
The Integrated Industrial Township (IIT), Greater Noida is a Greenfield industrial smart city within Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), Dadri–Greater Noida–Ghaziabad Investment Region (DNGIR). The project was spread over 747 acres, with an investment of approximately ₹33,000+ crore and was approved in 2014. It offers pre-engineered infrastructure and is well connected with the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, Yamuna Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, NH-34 and the upcoming Noida International Airport (Jewar). The township is anticipated to bring in electronics, engineering, auto, IT/ITeS and logistics industries.
- Integrated Industrial township, Vikram Udyogpuri (Madhya Pradesh)
Integrated Industrial Township (IIT) Vikram Udyogpuri is a Greenfield industrial smart city in Madhya Pradesh near the city of Ujjain, as part of the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). The project has a total cost of approximately ₹808.60 crore and was approved in 2014, spread over an area of 1,100 acres or approximately 4.5 sq. km. It has modern infrastructure from industry and is connected to NH-52, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the nearby railway network and the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore. Industries like engineering, pharmaceuticals, food processing, textiles, and logistics are expected to be drawn to the township.
Some of the key smart city industrial projects to be finished in phases by 2027 are:
- IMC Khurpia, Uttarakhand: which will be developed at a cost of ₹1,265 crore, on 1,002 acres will be based on the manufacturing of engineering goods, food processing and MSMEs, under the Amritsar–Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC).
- IMC Rajpura-Patiala, Punjab: The 1,099-acre project with an investment of Rs 1,367 crore is being built as a smart manufacturing and logistics hub in the state of Punjab.
- Dighi Port Industrial Area, Maharashtra: Project with an estimated cost of ₹5,469 crore spread over 6,056 acres which will provide a platform for port-led manufacturing and logistics and export industries.
- Palakkad Industrial Area, Kerala: The industrial city is being developed at a cost of ₹3,806 crore and will serve the purpose of manufacturing engineering goods, medical devices, and machinery at an area of 1,710 acres and a part of the Kochi–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor.
- Jodhpur-Pali-Marwar Industrial Area (JAIPA), Rajasthan: This 1,578-acre project, having an investment of ₹922crore, is likely to benefit textile, engineering and MSME sectors in the area.
Conclusion
The four smart industrial cities are an important step towards the industrial corridor programme in India. The NICDP will further facilitate manufacturing industry, logistics, investment, and create huge job opportunities in the coming few years, which will contribute to India’s vision of becoming a manufacturing hub in the world.
