"The new e-governance system will not only help in generating revenue but even the citizens will get to know where the money is coming from and where it is spent," said Nandan Nilekani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Infosys.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Infosys' eGovernment Foundation. In a bid to plug in revenue leakages, the MCD decided to use Information Technology (IT) in a big way. Infosys' e-government will begin work by providing key Municipal e-governance applications at the MCD for free. The nonprofitable trust aims to improve governance in India.

With the help of this software, citizens will have Municipal information at the click of a mouse. "Our everyday income is Rs 40-60 lakh. I think with this software we can generate around Rs 1 crore. With its help, the leakages would be plugged easily. This system will help save the time and cost which is otherwise incurred," said Municipal Commissioner Rakesh Mehta.

The Chief Guest on the occasion, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, expressed her wish that the new method will work well.

The MoU seeks to further the process of IT applications in the areas of property tax, public grievances, geographical information system (GIS) applications and fund-based accounting.

Infosys introduced this system in Bangalore earlier. This, is for the first time that it decided to join hands with the MCD. "What Delhi does, everybody follows. By introducing this system in MCD, we would be able to demonstrate the same in other parts as well," added Mr Nilekani.

Within a span of one year, the foundation ensures to have the system working in the civic body. "It will take us around six months in gathering the data and within a year, the whole information related to Municipal matters would be made available to citizens.

This would further help in bringing transparency in the methodology," said Srikanth Nadhamuni, the managing trustee, eGovernment Foundation.
