dvanced traffic monitoring system powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) at several locations across the city. The system has already issued fines to several motorists violating traffic rules.
The initiative, part of the second phase of the Smart City Command and Control Centre, includes AI and back-end programming for corridor management. The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) aims to streamline vehicular movement across Mangaluru. To support this, 144 high-definition cameras and radar units have been installed citywide at a cost of around Rs 7 crore.
These AI-enabled cameras are mounted at a height of about 20 feet and can capture clear images from up to 50 metres. The radar system measures vehicle speeds between traffic signals. When a violation is detected, motorists receive an SMS with details including a photo of the vehicle, registration number, vehicle type, location, date and time of the violation, rule violated, and fine amount.
Types of violations that may attract fines:
- Riding without a helmet
- Over-speeding
- Not wearing seat belts in cars and other vehicles
- Using a mobile phone while driving
- Triple riding on two-wheelers
- Jumping red signals
- Driving on the wrong side
- Talking on the phone while driving
- Stopping on zebra crossings at signals
- Using damaged number plates
Trial operations have been underway for about ten days, and offenders have already begun receiving messages on their mobile phones. Violators are typically notified within 15 days of the incident.
Full-scale enforcement from July 1
The Mangaluru City Police, in collaboration with Smart City authorities, will begin full-scale monitoring through these cameras starting July 1. “If motorists follow traffic rules, there will be no issues whatsoever,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) K. Ravishankar.
