Transforming Government since 2001

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reviews energy infrastructure plans with top officials, outlining a vision for Hyderabad’s ‘Future City’ with smart poles, underground power lines, and solar-powered innovation.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to install smart electric poles under the GHMC limits and an underground power supply network in the upcoming ‘Future City’, which is being planned on the city’s outskirts.

Smart electric poles, which combine lighting with surveillance, communication, and environmental monitoring, will be installed at select locations on a pilot basis including the Secretariat, Necklace Road and KBR Park. The Chief Minister proposed relocating existing high-tension power lines from the Future City area, ensuring no overhead power lines are visible in the model urban zone.

During a high-level review meeting on the power sector on Friday, Revanth Reddy asked the officials to modernise the state’s energy infrastructure to meet rising demands and support the city’s growing technological and industrial footprint.

“The Future City must reflect futuristic infrastructure, where even power lines remain invisible. Everything must go underground,” Revanth Reddy instructed. He also suggested the use of solar power along the 160-km Outer Ring Road, and the potential for solar panel installations on city footpaths and over nalas within GHMC limits.

Envisioning Hyderabad’s evolution into a digital powerhouse, Revanth Reddy announced plans for a dedicated ‘Data City’ on the city outskirts, expected to become a major hub for data centres in the near future.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who also holds the energy portfolio, attended the meeting along with top energy officials, including energy department principal secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Transco CMD D. Krishna Bhaskar, TGSPDCL CMD Musharraf Ali and TG Redco MD Anila Vavilla.

With Telangana witnessing unprecedented growth in power consumption, a record peak demand of 17,162 MW this year, a 9.8 per cent rise from the previous year, the Chief Minister stressed the need for a forward-looking approach. Officials projected that demand will increase to 18,138 MW by 2025–26 and nearly double to 31,808 MW by 2034–35.

Revanth Reddy directed the energy department to prepare a comprehensive three-year ‘Electricity Plan’ to address the sharp rise in demand driven by industrial expansion, new transportation projects and the establishment of global capability centres and data hubs.

He highlighted the importance of transitioning to clean energy sources, particularly solar and pumped storage solutions, under the state’s newly launched ‘Clean and Green Energy’ policy. “We must utilise all available resources for floating solar projects and partner with globally renowned companies to expand clean energy generation,” he stated.

The Chief Minister further underlined that future power needs for irrigation, Metro Rail expansion, railway projects and satellite townships should be carefully factored in. Coordination with the HMDA was also advised to align power planning for radial roads and the proposed Regional Ring Road.
