Ranchi's Smart City Corporation illuminated its two 22-km lanes with 1,300 yellow LED lights, enhancing visibility and safety for commuters. This development is part of the broader Smart Cities Mission, aiming to improve urban infrastructure through innovative solutions.
The lighting system comprises 160-watt LEDs at intersections and 120-watt LEDs along regular stretches, ensuring optimal illumination tailored to specific roadway needs. Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the construction company responsible for the installation, completed the project by April 2024. Following a year-long monitoring period, the responsibility for the lights was handed over to Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) for the power supply to the lights.
The lights can adjust brightness in response to traffic density. During peak traffic hours, the lights will increase their intensity to enhance visibility, while during periods of low traffic, they may dim automatically, contributing to energy conservation.
"The integration of sensor-based technology in our street lighting is a commendable step towards energy efficiency and public safety. This initiative not only beautifies our city but also ensures a safer commuting experience for our residents," said Amit Kumar, Public Relations Officer of Ranchi Smart City Corporation Limited (RSCCL).
Rakesh Kumar, general manager at RSCCL, said, "The adoption of LED lighting significantly reduces energy consumption, aligning with our commitment to sustainable urban development. The smart dimming feature further optimises power usage, reflecting our dedication to innovative energy solutions."
The Smart Cities Mission, launched by the Govt of India in 2015, aims to develop urban areas that are citizen-friendly and sustainable. Ranchi's recent advancements in smart lighting exemplify the mission's objectives, showcasing the city's commitment to leveraging technology for urban improvement.
