The city police have decided to install as many as 1,000 CCTVs across areas for security purposes and activate them over the next few months.
Work to set up 100 cameras in the first phase has already begun at different locations.
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-Headquarters) Chandrakant Khandvi told TOI, "The cameras have been procured by the police from different organisations under CSR activity."
Meanwhile, the installation of 800 cameras throughout the city is already underway under the Smart City project — so, the cameras being set up by the city police will cover areas that are not already considered under the former project, said an officer.
This dense network of CCTV cameras will be handy during the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela that is slated to take place in Nashik in 2027, said officials in the know.
Nashik commissioner of police (CP) Sandeep Karnik had earlier appealed to residents and commercial establishment owners to set up CCTV cameras for security purposes, ensuring that these face the street opposite homes, colonies, offices, shops and more. The purpose, said the top cop, is to ensure that individuals approaching or exiting these properties are clearly visible. In a bid to encourage people to set up such cameras, an exhibition of CCTVs was also organised at the entrance of the mall along Untawadi Road recently.
The Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) project to install 800 CCTV cameras across Nashik has been ongoing for the past four to five years. The command-and-control centre was also set up at the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) headquarters and city police commissionerate, but the cameras have not been activated so far.
