The Maha Kumbh-2025 in Prayagraj will utilize an AI-based surveillance system to monitor citizen-centric services. A pilot run under the Smart City Mission achieved an 86.4% resolution rate for urban issues, demonstrating successful implementation of AI technologies in waste management, streetlight maintenance, and encroachment control.
The Maha Kumbh-2025 is set to be the first mega event where many citizen-centric services will be monitored by an artificial intelligence-based surveillance system.
The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has successfully carried out a pilot run of the AI system as part of the Smart City Mission and will introduce the same within the mela area.
The AI algorithms can detect six major urban issues-- waste, streetlight, pothole, encroachment, illegal hoarding, and sanitation management and services.
Work is underway to implement a citizen feedback mechanism to evolve the system further and engage locals to strengthen municipal services.
Principal secretary of the urban development department, Amrit Abhijat said as part of the initiative, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the smart waste management control room on Nov 27.
"The pilot project showed successful results during the first month of its trial. About 86.4% of the issues were resolved in the first 30 days. The success of the AI-powered system demonstrates our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for better citizen services. The experiment is going to become a model for other cities across the state as well," said Abhijat.
Municipal commissioner Chandra Mohan Garg said: "With advanced cameras monitoring 70 km of major routes daily, we have been able to identify and address civic issues efficiently over time. We have achieved a 97.3% resolution rate in waste management, 89.6% resolution in maintaining streetlights, as well as the condition of road pavement, unauthorised encroachment, among other issues."
Officials said 72 out of 74 garbage-related complaints, 181 out of 202 streetlight maintenance cases, and 52 out of 65 incidents related to unauthorised encroachment were disposed of through the system, which auto-generates event tickets for the control room upon detecting violations.
