On the evening of Shasthi, Guwahati witnessed the illumination of 944 roads with 10,000 smart street lights equipped with a Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS). This initiative aims to enhance the safety and security of the city’s residents, especially the elderly and women.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, during the launch of the project’s Phase-I, stated that efforts will be made to complete the installation of the remaining 10,667 smart street lights within the next year.
The CM explained that the Guwahati Utilities Company Limited, established last year, was tasked with developing a modern street lighting system that can be controlled from a central control room. The company was also responsible for creating a mechanism to dim the street lights post-midnight, reducing expenditure and saving government revenue. With the launch of the CCMS-based smart street lights, a long-standing issue of the city has been addressed, ensuring the safety and security of its residents.
Sarma acknowledged the challenges faced by Guwahati, describing it as an “unscientific city” that has grown haphazardly without proper planning. He attributed this to the increasing population load and the lack of investment in the city’s development for an extended period. However, the government has been making efforts to improve the city's infrastructure and reduce the population load in recent years.
The CM highlighted the positive impact of various infrastructure projects, such as the construction of flyovers and elevated corridors along the Bharalu River, which have significantly reduced travel time between Maligaon and Sasal. He also mentioned that the expansion of the city and the ongoing construction of the Guwahati ring road will further decrease the population load in the city center.
In addition to the smart street lights, the govt has implemented an Integrated Traffic Management System to systematize traffic flow control. The CM announced that 1,000 CCTVs will be installed and operational in the city from Jan 1, aiding in crime prevention and management.
Furthermore, the state govt has been addressing the city’s waste management issue by setting up waste treatment plants, with plans to establish another high-capacity plant in the future.
