To promote the development of sustainable cities and enhance urban resilience, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a wing of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has rolled out a plan for converting Indore into a green city.

IGBC has suggested a detailed study on the basis of the 24 green city indicators to achieve the goal of a green city.

According to IGBC, out of the 28 cities in India that have been registered for the green city initiative, 18 have already been certified under various rating categories.

"We have delivered a comprehensive presentation to the district administration, outlining the steps necessary to convert Indore into a green city, thereby achieving the objective of a sustainable and more urbanized metropolis. We are optimistic about Indore's inclusion as the 29th Indian city on the list of Green cities, given its current status as the cleanest city in the nation," stated Saurav Choudhury, counsellor, IGBC-CII, Indore.

The green measures for developing green city infrastructure includes developing a sound ecology, incorporating plans to improve citizens health, enhance green cover, water efficiency, smart parking, rainwater harvesting and proper waste recycling among several other measures.

IGBC’s green cities framework is aligned with the govt of India’s Smart City Mission, Niti Aayog’s Annual SDG India Index and National Mission on Sustainable Habitat 2.0.

"Green cities are future-ready cities, proactively addressing challenges that may arise in the future by adhering to a range of global parameters. The objective is to develop cities with a minimal carbon footprint, ultimately striving for carbon neutrality," explained Choudhury.

IGCB has also appealed to the Madhya Pradesh government to provide incentives for green buildings to encourage people to embrace sustainable development. The Indore chapter of IGBC has recommended incentivizing and collaborating with the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association (CREDAI) to promote green buildings in both residential and commercial sectors.
