After having broken ground for its 4,000 crore integrated electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu through group company VinFast, Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup has now set its sights on Telangana and Hyderabad, in particular.

The Vietnamese giant is looking at the possibility of setting up a 1,000-acre mega smart city project in and around Hyderabad and has already begun scouting for options around the city, sources told TOI.

VinFast India leadership team led by its CEO Pham Sanh Chau also met industries minister D Sridhar Babu late last week to discuss potential areas of investment, Telangana industries ministry sources said.

“The Vietnamese player is not just looking at a smart city project but is also open to setting up EV components manufacturing in the state,” a source said.

The discussions centred around large-scale public key infrastructure projects, sustainable smart urban mobility solutions, services for future cities, and social housing initiatives it is learnt.

“The minister highlighted the urgent need to build robust urban infrastructure, including new satellite cities with clean water, reliable power, and transportation systems, as well as 5G-enabled smart mobility, healthcare, business infrastructure as well as wellness and hospitality facilities supported with social housing,” the source said.

Those privy to the meeting also said the minister told VinFast officials that Hyderabad is expected to becoming home to half of Telangana’s population within the next 15 years due to the rapid urban migration, putting considerable stress on the city’s existing infrastructure, which was a problem for which state govt was looking for partners.

Vingroup is already setting up a $1.3 billion smart city project on the outskirts of Hanoi and the group’s officials also apprised the minister about their plans to set up such smart cities in other parts of the world.

The VinFast India chief executive officials also recently met Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and proposed the setting up of a 4,000 crore EV and battery manufacturing plant there.
