South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai has urged the Urban Affairs Department to complete the Smart City project work in his constituency within six months.

In a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who holds the Urban Affairs portfolio, Shullai said that the department has identified several strategic locations for the implementation of the integrated command and control centre (ICCC) and various equipment/components in various localities.

A series of meetings with traditional heads, welfare societies and the department have been initiated to ensure time-bound completion of the work. Any pending work should be completed within six months, Shullai stated.

He also highlighted that the ‘smart road’ from Rhino Point to Laban Last Stop has not yet begun and the installation of CCTVs in the Cantonment area has not been carried out despite several reminders.

Considering the alarming issues of drugs and theft, Shullai stressed that the completion of such projects would greatly aid the police department in maintaining law and order.

The MLA also maintained that sensitive areas within Shillong Cantonment, such as Jhalupara and Lower Paltan Bazar, should not be excluded from the Smart City project, as this would undermine its purpose.
