Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to revolutionize road maintenance in Haryana by implementing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. This groundbreaking initiative will be the first of its kind in the state, promising enhanced efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

In its current state, GMDA manually conducts surveys and estimates for road repairs based on visual inspections. However, this traditional approach has limitations in terms of accuracy and time efficiency. By adopting AI technology, GMDA aims to overcome these challenges and reduce reliance on extensive manpower.

As part of the AI-based solution, GMDA plans to engage an agency that will deploy a specialized vehicle equipped with all-weather cameras and GPS. This vehicle will capture video footage, identifying and recording road issues such as potholes, cracks, and patches. It will also assess deficiencies in road furniture, including missing or faded lane markers, boundary markers, and road signs. Additionally, the vehicle will detect damaged speed breakers, median vegetation, and streetlights, thus ensuring comprehensive road health data.

PK Aggarwal, head of GMDA’s Smart City division, expressed the authority’s vision: “GMDA is working towards adopting AI-based tech to gauge road conditions and ensure efficient monitoring and maintenance. This technology will reduce dependency on human intervention and improve our ability to address deficiencies promptly.”

The selected agency will carry out 12 surveys each month for a year, covering the entire 300km road network under GMDA’s jurisdiction. This data will be sent to GMDA’s integrated command and control center (ICCC), where AI software will generate area estimations for potholes and cracks. These estimations will aid in the preparation of detailed project reports for road repairs.

The adoption of AI is expected to streamline the road maintenance workflow, reducing the time required for surveys, tender processes, and agency selection. Monthly reports on road conditions will enable early intervention to address deficiencies and prevent further deterioration. By addressing issues promptly, the maintenance costs can be kept under control, preventing small potholes from expanding and leading to more extensive repairs.

With AI-based solutions, GMDA aims to achieve not only improved road maintenance but also a comprehensive overview of the city’s roads through an integrated dashboard. This will ensure better monitoring, efficient maintenance, and timely repairs to keep the road network in optimal condition.
