On January 19, 2024, the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) welcomed the European Union (EU) Ambassador to India, Herve Delphin, and other EU delegates to the Smart City Living Lab, a hub of innovation testing for smart cities. The visit underscored the lab’s pivotal role in advancing smart city technologies, with a focus on areas like water, energy, solar, pollution, weather, and crowd management.

Exploring a Nexus of Innovation

The Smart City Living Lab, a brainchild of IIIT-H faculty following an India-EU ICT Standardization Collaboration project trip to France, is a platform where cutting-edge sensor technology and communication protocols, such as 5G and LORAWAN, intersect. It ensures the interoperability of Internet of Things (IoT) standards, a critical component in our increasingly connected world.

The lab boasts a data warehouse equipped with standardized information models and has successfully deployed 300 sensor nodes across the IIIT-H campus. It is a testament to the institution’s commitment to harnessing the power of technology to drive smart city initiatives.

A Glimpse into the Future of Smart Cities

During the visit, the EU delegation got an insight into the Center of Excellence (CoE) on IoT and oneM2M for Smart Cities. The CoE’s water monitoring technologies were particularly highlighted, showcasing the potential of technology in addressing global water challenges. The delegation also explored the lab’s ongoing development of a city operating platform and discussed IIIT-H’s partnerships and collaborations.

Waste management, a pressing global concern, was a key discussion point. The delegates expressed interest in how smart technology can be harnessed to create sustainable waste management solutions, reflecting the EU’s commitment to a greener future.

Commending the Smart Initiative

The visit concluded with a presentation of the dashboard displaying environmental statistics and the analytics of the deployed sensor nodes. The EU Ambassador, Herve Delphin, lauded the Smart City Living Lab and the strides it has made in smart city innovations.

Founded in 1998, IIIT-H is an autonomous research university with a focus on IT and its applications across various domains. It continues to lead the way in smart city innovation, setting the stage for a more sustainable and connected future.
