A Geographic Information System (GIS) project has been successfully implemented through Pimpri-Chinchwad Smart City Limited, as part of the Smart City Mission initiated by the Government of India. This innovative project introduces a state-of-the-art GIS system to enhance the day-to-day operations of 20 different departments within the municipal structure. Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Shekhar Singh shared insights into the project, emphasizing that it marks a pioneering initiative undertaken by the municipality in the country.

The GIS system empowers various departments of the Municipal Corporation to streamline their operations seamlessly. According to Commissioner Shekhar Singh, the project offers a view of over 300 data layers, encompassing essential details such as the locations of municipal facilities, including roads, water tanks, utility poles, footpaths, parks, ward-wise areas, playgrounds, municipal properties, and more. Officers and employees in each department can access this information according to their respective areas of operation, which will be instrumental in facilitating data editing and report generation.

The project’s official launch took place as Commissioner Singh inaugurated the PCMC geoportals designed for the 20 divisions within the Municipal Corporation. The event occurred in the Standing Committee Hall and was attended by Additional Commissioners Pradeep Jambhale-Patil and Vijay Khorate, along with a diverse group of employees and officers. The project was introduced through a video presentation, offering participants an understanding of its implications.

The 20 municipal departments now equipped with PCMC Geoportals include the Building Permission Department, Disaster Management Cell, Education Department, Electricity Department, Environmental Department, Fire Department, Parks Department, Health Department, Land and Life Department, Medical Department, Taxation and Tax Collection Department, Social Development Department, Drainage Department, Sky Sign and License Department, Slum Rehabilitation Authority, Sports Department, Town Planning Department, Veterinary Department, and Water Supply Department.

Commissioner Shekhar Singh shared his thoughts on the project, saying, “The GIS system has been developed in collaboration between the Municipal Corporation and Smart City Ltd., aiming to enhance administrative efficiency within municipal departments and offer online services for our citizens. This groundbreaking project represents the first of its kind in the country, designed to promote transparent administration and citizen engagement, and it’s poised to revolutionize the way we govern.”
