The paradigm shift in the automotive industry is driven by the integration of technologies like 5G, AI/ML, Natural Language Processing, and in parallel cloud computing enhances the vehicle experience.

In today’s uber-tech world, consumerisation of automotive has rapidly changed expectations for what our vehicles need to deliver. In such a scenario, imagining a car that doubles up as a comfortable living room and a productive workspace on the go is not tough. The evolution of car cabins from traditional transportation pods to multifunctional living spaces is already underway. Data suggests by 2022, around 25% of new cars sold worldwide were equipped with connected features, providing an immersive experience to passengers and drivers alike.

Connected vehicle cabin: an intelligent living space

Future vehicles, like car cabins, are being designed to offer modular seating for flexible arrangements, optimising space and enhancing comfort, resembling a futuristic lounge or office environment on wheels. Interactive displays with advanced touch screens and augmented reality features will further elevate this experience overlaying digital information onto the physical surroundings, providing real-time guidance, and enhancing safety for instance, Mercedes-Benz all-electric EQS sedan with the MBUX Hyperscreen, features a combination of three screens, stretching 56 inches from the driver’s side to the passengers, where they can adjust their preferences or play games like Tetris. It also has voice control and AI decision-making central to this revolution is the concept of the ‘Intelligent Cockpit,’ serving as the vehicle’s nerve center, integrating various technologies and sensors for a seamless connected vehicle experience. It will enable effortless communication between the vehicle and its occupants, ensuring an intuitive and safe driving environment.

The incorporation of AI and machine learning play a vital role, analysing user data, driving patterns, and preferences to create a responsive cabin. Personalised seat positions, temperature settings, curated entertainment options, and suggested pit stops make every journey uniquely tailored.

The paradigm shift in the automotive industry is driven by the integration of technologies like 5G, AI/ML, Natural Language Processing, and in parallel cloud computing enhances the vehicle experience. 5G enables faster communication and real-time data exchange.

Understanding the Indian consumer

India is rapidly emerging as a significant market for connected vehicles, with a tech-savvy millennial population driving the adoption. The connected car market in India is predicted to reach $32.5 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 22.2%. Automakers recognise the immense potential and are looking at offering personalised solutions tailored to local preferences. Manufacturers are also considering cultural aspects, offering language support for regional languages, making the technology more accessible and user-friendly for a broader demographic in this fast-growing market.

Millennials: shaping the future of connected vehicles

Automakers globally, including in India, are focused on understanding millennials’ expectations as they constitute over 40% of new car buyers in the US and a similar percentage in other regions. Millennials prioritise interior features and aesthetics, viewing cars as an extension of their personality and lifestyle. To cater to their preferences, manufacturers are creating bespoke designs that seamlessly blend connectivity, customisation, and consumer identity in technologically advanced interiors. The latest features are aimed at providing users with simple, seamless and customised experiences at a speed and frequency that can travel with the user from vehicle to vehicle in the same way that apps and in-app features can be accessed across multiple devices, especially useful for consumers who use more than one vehicle.

As vehicles get metamorphosed into connected living spaces, they also play a crucial role in enhancing urban mobility through seamless integration with smart city infrastructure. Leveraging Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, these vehicles are being envisaged as active participants in a dynamic and interconnected transportation ecosystem. They can share real-time data with traffic management systems, receive information about road conditions, and communicate with pedestrians and cyclists. This integration holds the potential to revolutionise the way cities manage transportation.

Powered by cutting-edge technologies, these intelligent vehicles will not optimise journeys for efficiency, convenience, and safety but also play a role in shaping smarter cities, progress in reducing congestion and promoting eco-friendly practices.
