Finally after a rather very long wait, Indian government has announced the launch of top level country code in the Devnagri script. The government believes that it is going to make things rather enticing for the local Indian languages. Government has also said that other Indian languages are also going to get domains in regional Indian languages besides Urdu, a language that is written and spoken universally across South Asia.
But many people are calling the government’s actions in this regard very slow and uninspiring. They claim that the country code top-level domain name for India .bharat should have been made available years ago and the delay shows that Indian languages including Devnagiri actually don’t seem to have much of an importance for the central government apart from sloganeering and rabble rousing.
But thankfully .bharat the country code top-level domain name is now a reality and people are rushing to get their websites registered under it. Despite it being really, really late, people are still excited about the final arrival of .भारत (.Bharat) top-level domain to India. There are also reports that within a few weeks time similar version will be available in local Indian languages too. This is a top level domain and there are reasons to believe –according to experts –that the new country code will be of great help in bridging the digital divide. Experts are of the opinion that this domain (ccTLD) name will also help accelerate the e-governance in the otherwise a rather third world country.
Despite the delay we must thank National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) for fixing and accelerating things in this regard. This is the organization that has been working very hard in getting this top level domain name for India. The National Internet Exchange of India is the neutral meeting point of the ISPs in India. Its main purpose is to facilitate exchange of domestic Internet traffic between the peering ISP members. This enables more efficient use of international bandwidth, saving foreign exchange. It also improves the Quality of Services for the customers of member ISPs, by avoiding multiple international hops and thus reducing latency. But this would have been rather very difficult to accomplish it alone. It worked in close collaboratio with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in founding an expert team on Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). Now there are efforts to come up with similar launches in regional languages including Urdu, Tamil, Gujarati, Punjabi, Telugu and Bangala.
