Transforming Government since 2001
With Kerala making remarkable strides in the use of free and open sources software, the Centre has sought suggestions from the state on popularising its use at the national level.

The department of information technology at the Centre has sought the assistance of the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software here in this regard.

Kerala is among the few states that used FOSS for e-governance applications to a large extent. The state also introduced FOSS at the school level through the IT@School programme.

The state’s preference for FOSS recently received wider attention after it also insisted on FOSS-based software for the Aadhaar enrolment. The former Kerala IT secretary, Mr. Ajay Kumar, who is now serving as joint secretary in DIT, has sought suggestions from the state.

“We will be submitting a set of suggestions on the FOSS-based initiates that could be taken at the national level,” said the ICFOSS director Mr. Satish Babu.

Mr Babu told Deccan Chronicle that the Centre’s move to make device drivers compatible with open source for e-governance applications would give an impetus to FOSS.

“There is a huge potential for open source which is now being used in new sectors including the film industry,” he said.

A session on information and communication technology and climate change to be organised by the ICFOSS in association with the Centre for Earth Science Studies here next month would be a first initiative in the country on using ICT application for climate change, he added.
