The basic purpose of this project is to bring transparency in the transport department as well as to save public from harassment in government offices while getting their driving licenses and registration certificates (RCs). The transport authorities have also checked the shortcomings being faced by applicants in the Suvidha Kendras of five districts ' Ludhiana, Patiala, Ferozepur, Jalandhar and Bathinda.
Sources revealed that there is a need to improve infrastructure and manpower in the Suvidha Kendras if transport department wants it to handle e-governance. Most of the work has already been shifted from the district transport office to the Suvidha Kendras but since its shifting the applicants have not been getting RCs and driving licenses in time. When contacted, state transport commissioner Hussan Lal said, ''We are checking the infrastructure available in the Suvidha Kendras and if required we will recommend for more infrastructure. The project of e-governance is very important for applicants and hopefully it will be implemented within the next four to five months.''
Residents believe the system needs a lot of improvement so that people do not have to face harassment in public departments. Akhil Gupta, a student and resident of Mahaveer Enclave said, ''Getting a driving license or RC is an uphill task for common man and it would be a boon for thousands of residents if the system is given over to private hands.''
