Though the planned expenditure for the current fiscal is similar to what it was last year, it is for the first time that the Government has made the quantum of spend stipulatory, said Chandrashekhar. Moreover, all State Governments and agencies will now have to compulsorily spend 2-3 percent of their budgets on technology.
However, Chandrashekhar did not throw light on how much has the Government spent on IT this year. "The problem is not of higher allocation but the ability to transfer projects into outcome. Our agencies do not have the required the maturity to go in for a multi-sourcing model yet," he added. Also, Chandrashekhar said that the Government is trying to give opportunities to as many SME players as possible.
"These firms should start with smaller projects at State level and establish their credibility before they can work on national-level projects," he added. Separately, the IT Ministry has recommended the Finance Ministry to give Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) the same benefits given to special economic zones in the forthcoming Budget.
