The focus of the UPA government and the Communication Ministry, in particular, was to ensure that the ICT revolution reaches all sections and all parts of the country by ensuring that it is affordable and easily accessible, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot told reporters here today.
He said that he did not want IT to become an"elitist concept"but one that was palatable to the common man in the country, living far away in remote rural areas.
The department was making all efforts to ensure that"e-governance was made available to all and everyone,"he said.
The ministry was keen that IT was not restricted to just Hindi and English-speaking population and hence was focusing on regional software.
Sixteen regional language software out of the 22 official languages had been distributed freely across the country, so as to ensure these services proliferated right to the village level, the minister said.
He said 10-11 million mobile connections were added per month. Last year, 131 million connections were added, out of which 50 per cent came from rural parts. Currently, the country had 400 plus mobile connections and"the next 400 connections will come from small rural towns and villages."
The minister said a meeting on 3G spectrum allocation was held yesterday,"but no decision had been arrived at".
In Bangalore , the 3-G services will be launched in September by BSNL, he said.
