Transforming Government since 2001
Two months from now, Pune bureaucrats will not have to rush to Mumbai for meeting with or giving a powerpoint presentation to senior officers. A video conferencing facility will help them cut their travel.

Officials from divisional commissioner to the collector, even tehsildars will be connected through the Maharashtra State Wide Area Network (MSWAN).

Saving time on travel and increasing efficiency, the Rs 104 crore project bagged by Spanco Telesystems will be implemented throughout the state within a year.

State Secretary of Information Technology K Shivaji said intranet communication with all offices will improve functioning of all the departments. "It will increase communication among all departments and the facility will help better updation," he said.

Spanco Telesystems will complete the project by January, 2009. Currently, trial runs are being conducted in different talukas. "Besides, the Pune divisional commissioner and the district collector, tehsildars from 13 talukas will be connected through the network which will ensure smooth monitoring of all the activities from the state headquarters," said Ashish Sahasrabuddhe, vice president (sales) of the firm.

"With the trial run over for the divisional commissioner and the collector, it is now the turn of Baramati, Daund, Bhor, Mulshi, Indapur, Haveli and Shirur talukas," said Sahasrabuddhe.

All 35 district offices, six divisional commissionerates and the mantralaya will soon be connected under the plan.

"It is a wide area network (WAN) service which will provide voice, data and video-based applications having a backbone link of minimum 2 mbps," said Sahasrabuddhe.

Mantralaya said it will help all the bureaucrats in communicating directly with the state headquarters and making presentations through this service. "It will help in better coordination and better implementation of any project as there will be lot of sharing of ideas through this facility."

The project will cover 324 talukas and 366 offices will be connected through a lease line while more than 3,000 departments will be connected horizontally. The project has been planned under the national e-governance plan (NeGP) of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Govt of India.

Maharashtra will soon the select states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, which have such a systemt in place. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh are set to follow suit.
