Two kiosks under a pilot project in West Bengal were on Wednesday launched at the gram panchayat level in two districts to assess information needs of the rural people and viability and sustainability of their operation on commercial basis through women self help groups.

Launching the kiosks on-line at the state secretariat, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that these would help deliver the shared visions of Microsoft and the state government to employ the benefits of information communication technology to catalyse progress and access to information, education, e-governance, telemedicine services amongst others within the rural hinterland.

Bhattacharjee said that Microsoft had provided the IT infrastructure, technology, connectivity and training support for the two kiosks at Pipulberia-II GP in East Midnapore and at Kankalitala GP in Birbhum district.

Three more models would soon be made operational in the same model by Microsoft, he said.

Stating that an in-depth training for operation of the kiosks has already been completed by Microsoft, he said that three women SHG members would be deployed per kiosk in both the districts.

The common services centre project was implemented jointly by the Microsoft and departments of panchayat and rural development under national e-governance plan to empower the rural community in the state.

State's Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Surjya Kanta Mishra, Information Technology Minister Debesh Das and Microsoft managing director Neelam Dhawan graced the occasion.
