Keeping in mind the ever-growing middle class, the state IT minister Debesh Das today pointed out that West Bengal has a tremendous potential for greater IT percolation. With the introduction of e-governance activities the state government can now look forward to reaching out to the masses with Information Technology (IT) with a push for contents in local languages.

“The standard of people in villages in West Bengal is higher than other metros and we have a large middle class, which will help us to attract IT,” said Das, speaking at the inauguration of an IT exhibition organised by the Computer Association of Eastern India (COMPASS).

Das called for an improvement in the hardware sector if the state was to make further progress on the IT front. “We are setting up an advance IT Park near Kharagpur IIT. In Sector 5 and Rajarhat, one building will be devoted entirely to hardware industries,” said Das.

Emphasising on West Bengal’s role in PC percolation, Vinni Mehta, Executive Director, Manufacturers Association for IT (MAIT) urged it to take a cue from Chennai, where the government operates an aggressive Investment Promotion Cell.

Meanwhile, the participants of COMPASS 2006 - 20 leading brands of the IT industry are taking part this year - could not deny the success story of the event. “Unlike other metros, where the bulk of our orders comes from the corporates, in Kolkata, however, we cater to a lot of end consumers,” said Mukesh Gupta, vice-director, AOC.
