Computerisation of local governance and district administration was initially planned to bring transparency and encourage officials concerned to use this ultra modern communication facility.

Over the time, the district unit got involved in various computerisation projects, which contributed to the e-governance drive by providing various information about district administration, Zilla Panchayat and other state and central departments.

Among them website of Agriculture Department provides details regarding agriculture and marketing.

It provides information on annual normal rainfall of the district, main cropping season, total cultivable area, details of pesticides to be used, fee for pesticide selling license, schemes of the Department and so on.

Agriculture Assistant, a basic level extension worker, is placed in each of GP to enlighten farmers about new technology and to ensure its adaptation to maximum extent.

Tips for farmers are available on daily basis on the website. Contingent crop plan is available apart from major events such as exhibition, melas and others.

Weather reports are made available on a day-to-day basis. Web based collection of progress reports relating to MMR and KDP is available online.

Department aims at transferring new technology evolved at laboratory and agriculture research stations to the farming community.

“Farmers can get information about current weather, market rate for their produce, government schemes and guidelines, details of fertilizers and license for dealers,” said Agriculture Officer responsible for e-governance K G Kumar.

Every taluk centre is installed with computers and internet facilities. Computer facility is also provided at all kasaba hoblies and at Raitha Samparka Kendras in Ulvi and Sorab.

At all these centres, farmers can approach officials to know details helpful for them.

“Farmers access department website with the help of officials in the centre. They are taking good advantage of facilities provided to them,” Kumar said.

All activities of APMC, Bangalore are computerised.

Ten APMCs including Davangere, Shimoga, Mysore, Mandya, Gulbarga, Raichur, Hubli, Mahalingapura, Byadgi, Sirsi have been selected for on-line display of prices of commodities.

The e-mail IDs and phone number of concerned authorities of the department, right from local to state level, are made available in the website.

If the access of computer goes in the same speed we may see farmers too sitting in front of computer or walking with a laptop!
