As part of the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) being implemented all over the country under the Department of Information Technology, Government of India, the first phase of the installation work of State-wide Area Network (SWAN) in Manipur has been underway.

According to an official source, National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been entrusted with the task of installing SWAN under NeGP in Manipur and consequently computerisation work of the important Government Departments in Manipur has been started.

Computerisation and networking of the Government departments and offices has been taken up with a view to bring about transparency in the governance and enable the common people to have easy accessibility to information.

After the successful implementation of NeGP, people would be able to download information from the official website of the Departments concerned not only from Community Information Centres (CIC) and cyber cafes but also through the help of mobile phones.

Prior to taking up the necessary works on NeGP in Manipur, a sensitisation workshop for the State legislators and bureaucrat officials had been conducted by the State's Science and Technology Department on December 1 last year at the State Guest House.

Unfortunately, most of the MLAs stayed away from participating in the said workshop invoking strong resentment from the organisers.

Though the video conferencing facility has not been formally inaugurated, the office of the NIC located at the Ministerial Block of the State Secretariat and offices of the respective Deputy Commissioners located in various district headquarters are relaying instant communication as and when the need arise.

With the completion of Local Area Network (LAN) of all the offices located in the State Secretariat, NIC has also started networking of all the Heads of Departments.

With the assistance of NIC, computerisation of land patta of some area under Imphal East District has already been done.

Meanwhile, over and above the 33 CICs which have already been set up under the Department of Information Technology in various block headquarters of the State, six more CICs would also be set up.

The block headquarters where the six CICs would be set up newly are Saitu-Gamphajol, Chakpikarong, Thanlon, Parbung, Saikot and Tuiboung.
