The Union Government on Monday launched an e-governance programme for the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) which handles orders worth Rs. 3,500 crore annually. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jairam Ramesh, who announced the launch of e-bidding for DGS&D rate contracts, said this would bring in more transparency in the process along with reducing procurement costs.

He said the initiative would largely benefit small scale industries as they would now be able to bid online for a contract and secure payments. He said the e-governance initiative had four components — e-purchase, e-tendering, e-inspection and e-payments.
