The Government today unveiled online bidding for DGS&D (Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals) contracts that will bring in more transparency in the process.

Announcing the launch of the e-governance initiative at DGS&D, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jairam Ramesh said this move will bring down the cost of procurement and bring in transparency benefitting both Government and trade.

"This initiative would largely benefit small scale industries as they will now be able not just to bid online for a contract but also secure payments," he said.

Giving details, the Minister said this e-governance initiative had four components including e-purchase, e-tendering, e-inspection and e-payments.

The total value of supply order based on DGS&D rate contracts is valued approximately at Rs 3,500 crore.

The initiative has been a joint effort of National Information Centre which has devised the software, HCL - supply of hardware, C1 besides DGS&D.

Ramesh said Director General of Ordinance Factories had also enquired about this initiative from DGS&D and asked them to work out a similar model for them.
