When it comes to tax collections, the revenue department's e-governance initiatives seem to be top priority for government during next financial year.

The department hopes to complete its work on creating a facility for online allotment of PAN and preparation and processing of returns by December, the finance ministry's outcome budget said.

Government has allocated Rs 138 crore for computerisation and e-governance initiatives on the direct tax side.

Similarly, on indirect taxes, government hopes to complete the task of consolidating customs, excise and service tax on a common platform by March 2007. During the current financial year the performance budget has taken credit for the successful implementation of VAT

So far, only eight states have claimed compensation for losses due to the implementation of the new regime from April last year. Of the Rs 2,500 crore provided for compensating for Vat losses, Rs 1,512 crore had been released till February.
