Kuching will soon replace its decades-old scratch coupon parking system with a new smart parking system.
A document sighted on DBKU’s website confirmed that a call for proposal for such system had been called last February 2025 by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).
The document states that SMA is inviting suitably and qualified suppliers/Contractors do develop, operate and manage a smart parking system for greater Kuching.
In an article carried out by Suara Sarawak, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman had confirmed that the old coupon parking system will soon be replaced with a new smart parking system by the end of 2025.
Despite DBKU making confirmation of the new parking system, it is likely the new system will be implemented on all public parking areas that are managed by Kuching City Parking System.
This is because Kuching City Parking System currently operates the coupon parking system in both DBKU and Council of the City of Kuching South (MBKS) areas, with the term ‘Greater Kuching’ reffering to the urbanized metropolitan area that extends beyond the core city of Kuching.
These areas include areas controlled by DBKU, MBKS, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
Digital parking in Sarawak and Borneo
In 2024, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng also confirmed that Kuching will be using a new digital parking system in the near future, but no update on such system had been noted until the announcement by Datuk Hilmy Othman.
It is worth to note that local councils in Miri, Bintulu and Kota Kinabalu have already adopted a digital parking system for public parking areas within its jurisdiction, with Kuching (or Greater Kuching) being one of the last major city in Sarawak or Malaysia Borneo to use such system.
Nonetheless, Kuching is among the pioneers when it comes to adopting the smart parking system in private owned parking spaces such as in malls, privately owned buildings as well as in private owned buildings that have government departments.
