The Sarawak government has reaffirmed its commitment to digital transformation, with the Premier of Sarawak lauding Miri’s efforts in advancing its Smart City agenda.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during a gala dinner commemorating the 20th anniversary of Miri’s city status, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg praised the northern Sarawak city’s progress.

“Sarawak is committed to accelerating our digital transformation agenda, and I am proud to see Miri actively embracing its role as a Smart City,” said the Premier.

He noted that Miri’s development is being driven by the integration of technology, smart infrastructure, and data-driven solutions initiatives that are helping to improve public services, enhance urban mobility, and build a more sustainable and efficient urban future.

A total of 16 projects worth RM110.5 million have been successfully implemented under the “Projek Rakyat” initiative by the Miri City Council (MCC), aimed at improving infrastructure and community wellbeing. See also GPS’ candidate Ting not annoyed with loss

Under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12), 14 development projects totalling RM123.5 million have been approved for Miri, aimed at further enhancing public infrastructure and amenities.

Through the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), running from 2015 to 2025, the city has seen the implementation of 548 projects, with a cumulative allocation of RM96.4 million over the decade.

Abang Johari also highlighted Miri’s emerging status as an educational hub, noting the presence of Curtin University Malaysia and the anticipated establishment of the Fudan University Institutes of Integrative Medicine.

“With these developments, Miri is poised to become a centre for international learning, research, and innovation attracting talent from across the region and contributing to a knowledge-based economy,” he said.

The Premier called on Miri folk to continue forging strong partnerships both locally and globally, through cultural exchanges, tourism, inclusive development, and digital innovation.

“I believe that Miri has much to offer and much to gain by building strong ties with other forward-looking cities and global institutions,” he said. See also Actions must reflect Malaysia concept

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin; Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus; Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Tourism) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang; Miri Resident Galong Luang, representing State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Mayor of Baguio City, Philippines Benjamin B. Magalong; Mayor of Itogon Municipality, Philippines Bernard Waclin; Mayor of Iskandar Puteri City Council, Johor Ahmad Mohd Nasir; and Musa Syahril, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching.
