The Ipoh Sentral Project symbolises the state government's commitment to transforming Ipoh into a progressive and resilient city, in line with the aspirations of Perak Sejahtera 2030.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the project reflects the state government's grand vision to elevate Ipoh into a modern city, responsive to future needs, and aims to create a more organised, community-friendly urban lifestyle.
"Strategically located near the Ipoh KTM station, this project is expected to serve as a catalyst for Ipoh's transformation — from a historic mining hub to a competitive modern hub — all while preserving its rich cultural and historical heritage.
"Moreover, Ipoh has been internationally recognised as one of the top 10 cities to visit in Asia in 2025, according to a renowned lifestyle magazine," he said.
He said this in his speech before witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad and Ipoh Sentral Sdn Bhd for the construction of the RM6.26 billion Ipoh Sentral Project at a hotel here.
Saarani added that this recognition highlights Ipoh's unique charm, which not only captivates tourists but also solidifies its position on the global stage.
"It serves as evidence that Ipoh is not just a city but a destination capable of providing extraordinary experiences to anyone who sets foot here.
"This recognition also strengthens Ipoh's strategic role as a gateway for investments and tourism in Malaysia, bolstered by its easy accessibility," he said.
Saarani said Ipoh's strategic location supports its growth as a major economic and tourism hub.
"With highway networks like PLUS, KTM ETS train services, and public transportation options such as buses and taxis, Ipoh offers unparalleled accessibility not just for its residents but also for tourists from within and outside the country.
"In this context, the Ipoh Sentral development plays a vital role as a catalyst for Ipoh's transformation. As the largest mixed-use development in central Ipoh, it not only revitalises the beauty of the iconic railway station but also enhances urban connectivity and strengthens sustainable and inclusive urban living," he said.
He described the Ipoh Sentral project as a testament to modern urban planning that addresses the challenges of today's urbanisation.
"By integrating a transport hub and mixed-use development, the people of Ipoh will benefit from improved accessibility, reduced dependency on private vehicles, and a more sustainable lifestyle.
"As part of the initiative to make Ipoh a smart city, the Ipoh Sentral project aligns with the objectives of the Ipoh Smart City Master Plan 2030.
"This development will support the application of smart technology in public transportation, traffic management, and community services," he said.
From an economic perspective, Saarani said the development will also act as a catalyst for accelerated growth in Ipoh.
"Surrounding commercial activities will be stimulated, while new job opportunities are created, providing direct economic benefits to the local community.
"Moreover, small and medium enterprises will gain new opportunities, further strengthening the competitiveness of the local economy.
"The focus on pedestrian-friendly environments, including seamless transit connections to the Ipoh KTM station, ensures a comfortable experience for residents and tourists while reviving the community spirit in the area," he said.
Saarani said that the project represents the unwavering commitment of the state government to ensure the well-being of its people without sacrificing its traditions and cultural identity.
"This priority demonstrates that development is not limited to physical advancements but also emphasises the human element and heritage values that shape the community's identity.
"Beyond that, it proves that modern development can coexist with the preservation of traditional values. Ipoh successfully reflects its identity as a progressive city with great aspirations for the future while remaining deeply rooted in its history, which forms the pride of this city," he said.
In a press conference later, Saarani expressed happiness at the realisation of the project.
"I am glad we have reached this stage, and I hope the local council and the relevant departments will fast-track all the necessary work now with this good synergy between both the federal and state governments," he said.
