Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) will install 500 artificial intelligence (AI) closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) within its jurisdiction, which will be fully operational by the second-quarter of 2024.

Johor Baru mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman said that the move was part of the council's steps to make Johor Baru a smart and safe city for all.

"The AI CCTV is meant for our Johor Baru Integrated Operation Command Center (JBIOCC), which has been developed since the end of September this year.

"The JBIOCC will help MBJB and security agencies such as the police to monitor traffic, natural disasters, crime, infrastructure conditions and enforcement within the city council’s jurisdiction," he added.

Mohd Noorazam said this after officially carrying out the soft launch of JBIOCC at Menara MBJB here on Sunday (Dec 31).

He added that so far, some 108 of such CCTVs had been installed at strategic locations within the city area while the remaining 392 CCTVs as well as five vehicle monitoring systems (VMS) and 10 panic buttons would be installed and be operational by April, 2024.

"The AI CCTVs have 15 features in it including being able to detect potholes, vehicles doing road offences including illegal parking and obstructing other road users as well as identifying individuals either wanted by police or carrying out vandalism on public properties, " he said.
