i-City is partnering with Huawei Enterprise Malaysia (Huawei) to realise a next-generation smart city for Malaysia’s No. 1 Technology City – converging smart infrastructure and solutions, as well as property technology (PropTech).
Through the partnership, i-City – with its existing capabilities as a smart city – will explore cutting-edge technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, smarter traffic management, greater governance as well as a safer and more secure community.
With its data centre and infrastructure technology expertise and ecosystem, Huawei will act as technology provider to design and develop a hyperscale data centre and manage artificial intelligence (AI).
Commenting on the collaboration, I-Berhad executive chairman Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong said i-City was steadfast in its vision of developing a smart city since its inception 15 years ago.
“With the basic infrastructure, such as having all units fitted with fibre optics, it enables further connectivity, such as smart-network homes, i-City SuperApp, face recognition and number plate recognition, among other things,” he said.
i-City is currently powered by Huawei’s 400G-capable network connectivity, providing the highest broadband connectivity in Malaysia.
According to I-Berhad executive director and chief technology officer Ricky Lim, the company has been unwavering in its mission to create better value for its stakeholders through smarter technologies.
“Imagine visiting a vibrant city with busy economic activities, minus the traffic congestion.
“Being able to commute seamlessly with autonomous buses that arrive on time.
“A city that is able to work together with enforcement units.
“Moving into an office that has all the AI infrastructure in place for the company’s growth and resource planning purposes, that is the kind of township i-City is working towards,” said Ricky.
“We are the first urban centre with an integrated certified Tier-3 data centre, which is currently operating at full capacity.
“With an exponential increase in data consumption, now is the right time to set up two new hyperscale data centres of 100,000 sq ft respectively.
“Also, with our government deploying 5G this year, it fits well with our timing to move on to the next phase of our plan,” Ricky added.
On the partnership, Huawei Malaysia managing director David Li pointed out that i-City was now closer to achieving its technological vision with this collaboration.
He said Huawei’s technological evolution would bring unprecedented possibilities to service innovation in i-City’s smart city and maximise its returns on its information and communication technology investments.
