The Ministry of Communication and Information's Information and Public Relations Centre chief Gatot S Dewa Broto said ICT was an alternative medium for Indonesians to communicate directly with other communities in the region to understand issues more deeply and not being dependent on one medium only.
"This opens up the mind of Indonesians who had been fed matters which retard the thinking. The ICT facilities enable Indonesians to find out if what is said is true or false.
"This clears up relations with the people of other nations who also share their opinions to bring Indonesians out of the cocoon which had shackled them for so long," he told Bernama.
Last year, more than six percent of the economic activities in Indonesia was from the ICT sector and the figure was expected to double this year.
Gatot, nevertheless, reminded the people not to abuse the ICT facilities to carry out negative matters which could tarnish the image of the nation.
"The hacking of websites such as the Football Association of Malaysia should not have been done, what more attacking one another on social sites. We are a polite society in the archipelago, we use ICT to exchange ideas and make friends," he said.
Speaking on the development of ICT in Indonesia, he said the development of ICT could be prolifically carried out with the support of a two percent taxation on the ICT industry in the country.
Furthermore, he said Indonesia was also in the process of uniting ICT with other industries like tourism to act as a catalyst in boosting income in the industries.
