Kuala Lumpur City Hall has created an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) department to integrate official use of ICT in serving the public. Mayor Datuk Mohmad Shaid Mohamad Taufek said today that the integration and development of computerised systems would help avoid duplication of efforts and better co-ordination between departments.

City Hall has integrated and wired most of its departments under a single portal. This is for our efforts to standardise work functions, share data, put services online and accomodate transparency to the public, he said.

This is also to ensure that we are in line with the Federal government's vision of E-Government and K-Economy. We want city dwellers to be able to communicate information with us electronically, he said after his keynote address in the Mayors' Caucus at the 18th Earoph 2002 today.

Also in line with City Hall's revised KL ICT Strategic Plan, he said, several systems had been implemented such as the Financial Management System, the Intelligent Transport System and the KL Geographical Information System (KLGIS).

The financial system allows for major financial transactions to be done online while the transport system integrates the Area Traffic Control System, Traffic Surveillance and Monitoring CCTV camera and Real Time Traffic Information system.

KLGIS is being developed to integrate spatial and non-spatial geographical information.

We have also implemented the Open System for Public Housing Registration to proacess applicants for renting public housing and purchasing low cost houses speedily, he said.

He said City Hall would also have the Computerised Public Complaints system and the interactive Development Control System to let the public check on the status of their applications and to make planning inquiries.

My staff are now working non-stop and are struggling hard because my expectations of them are very high.

It will all take time to be thoroughly implemented because there are 1.4 million people in the city so you can imagine the amount of data and files that will have to be sorted, he said.
